6/12/87 — 'Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Down This Wall.'

History views Ronald Reagan’s challenge to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on June 12, 1987, as the beginning of the end of the Berlin Wall. Although Reagan aides had qualms about his tough words, the president nonetheless proclaimed defiantly at Brandenburg Gate: ‘If you seek peace . . . Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!’
