Microsoft to Shut Down MSN TV

By    |   Sunday, 07 Jul 2013 09:22 PM

Microsoft is shutting down MSN TV, the service that allows users to access the Internet and email on their televisions using a wireless keyboard.

Microsoft informed current users that MSN TV will no longer be offered after Sept. 30, 2013.

The service was the first of its kind when founded as WebTV by Steve Perlman in 1996. It was purchased by Microsoft a year later and rebranded MSN TV in 2001.

Aimed at the non-tech savvy, it never caught on with customers, and Microsoft eventually gave it a backseat to its Xbox game consoles, which also have Internet access, CNET reports.

"The web has continued to evolve at a breathtaking pace, and there are many new ways to access the internet," an FAQ on the termination on the MSN TV website reads.
