Everyone can fall victim to a momentary misstep — a Public Relations gaffe that can forever affect life, a career, and more. In today’s instant media market, these gaffes travel faster than ever before.

But, that hardly means they are something new. Even some of the most powerful people on the planet have fallen victim to the momentary attack of the “oops.” Check out these powerful PR snafus for a lesson in what happens when you assume the cameras are not rolling. And don’t let summer casualness affect your career or life.

Nixon’s Watergate tapes: Whether or not he knew he was being recorded, and no matter what was on the “missing minutes” of the Watergate tapes, those recordings helped seal the end of Nixon’s political career. His situation should have been a harbinger of what was to come, but it seems modern presidents have learned little from that snafu.

Bush bashes Clymer: In the early 2000s, George W. Bush thought he was having a private chat with Dick Cheney when he described NY Times journalist Adam Clymer as “a major league a******.” For “W” that conversation was not nearly as private as he imagined.

Obama disses Kanye: At one point in a casual “off the record” conversation with the press, President Obama was asked what he thought of Kanye West’s infamous interruption of Taylor Swift. Obama replied that Kanye was a “jackass.” And, of course, that comment was not nearly as “off the record” as previously assumed.

Obama on Netanyahu: During a G-20 summit, French President Sarkozy turned to whisper his opinion about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Obama. Sarkozy said he could not stand the Israeli leader, calling him a “liar.” Instead, he fired back that “I have to deal with him every day!” The two world leaders thought they were having a private chat, but the entire exchange was caught on tape.

In today’s social media world, no matter what your role, realize your life can forever be affected by simple mistakes. Be ready to deal with your own oops moment, and you will stay one step ahead of the PR process.
