New York Rep. Lee Zeldin Saturday slammed the U.N. Security Council's vote Friday condemning Israeli settlements on territory belonging to the Palestinians before 1967 — equating President Barack Obama's abstention to "a last-minute fire being burned" before leaving office.

"It's a lot better when you're setting up the next president-elect for success and also standing strong with our nation's greatest allies," Zeldin, currently the only Jewish Republican in the House, told Dana Bash on CNN. "Israel is a beacon of freedom and liberty in a very dark region of the world.

"We should be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with them and not helping the Palestinian efforts to ethnically cleanse East Jerusalem."

The Security Council voted 14-0 to condemn the settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as a "flagrant violation of international law" and as having "no legal validity."

The United States abstained from the vote, which came a day after President-elect Donald Trump demanded that Obama exercise its veto power over the resolution.

Zeldin noted that Israel has made efforts toward Mideast peace, including withdrawing from the Gaza Strip in 2005. Hamas has controlled the area since 2007.

He told Bash that he met with Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah in 2015.

"He said in no certain terms they will not recognize Israel as a Jewish state," Zeldin said. "If they had an election right now, Hamas would win the election. That's how much influence they have.

"Long-term peace has to be negotiated on the ground, in that region, not at the United Nations," he added.

"As long as innocent Israelis are being murdered by Palestinian terrorists and rockets are being launched from the south and the north, the reality of trying to get this done by targeting Israel at the United Nations — that's not going to achieve that long-term peace."
