The Wall Street Journal editorial board offered scathing criticism of President Donald Trump, saying his decision to replace White House chief of staff Renice Priebus with Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly probably won’t change anything.

The conservative newspaper said that “this shuffling of the staff furniture won’t matter unless Mr. Trump accepts that the White House problem isn’t Mr. Priebus. It’s him.”

The editorial board explained that the reason Priebus “wasn’t as effective as he could have been is because Mr. Trump wouldn’t listen to him and wouldn’t let him establish a normal decision-making process.”

Instead, the Journal lamented that Trump appears to prefer chaos and “likes pitting faction against faction, as if his advisers are competing casino operators from his Atlantic City days.”

But the editorial stressed that “a presidential administration is a larger undertaking than a family business, and the infighting and competing leaks have created a dysfunctional White House.”

Although Trump apparently has respect for what he considers strong military men and there is some hope that Kelly, a retired Marine general, can bring some sort of order and discipline to the White House staff, the Journal doubts that will happen, pointing out that is, “what Anthony Scaramucci was supposed to do for the communications team, only to blow up in adolescent fashion this week by trashing Mr. Priebus and others in public.”

The editorial added that this was not apparently Scaramucci going against the president’s wishes, because, despite the public outcry at the profanity-laced rant, Trump reportedly liked it.

The editorial board ended its criticism with a warning that if Trump decides to continue on this path, “his presidency is careening toward a historic reputation where names like Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon reside.”
