Former CIA Director James Woolsey said Saturday that Russian President Vladimir Putin was "looking generous in superiority" in his praise of President Donald Trump at the G-20 summit in Germany.

"He believes he did very well in these discussions," Woolsey told Ana Cabrera on CNN. "He got good press.

"Lavrov did a good job for him, so he's being generous," he said, referring to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who sat in on the meeting Friday with President Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Putin told reporters in Hamburg Saturday that President Trump was "very different" in real life than on television.

"The Trump that you see on TV is very different than the real Trump," he said. "There is every reason to believe that we will be able to at least partially re-establish the level of cooperation that we need."

Woolsey, 75, who served under former President Bill Clinton, added that Putin probably would have created "the same mode of attitude" anyhow.

"But it has more effect because the press is carrying a lot of things saying, 'Oh, look how well Putin did, look how well Lavrov did.'"

Overall, however, Woolsey said that "this is all basically kind of lightweight.

"It's a little-bit important," he told Cabrera, "but it's a lot more important whether the Russians are repressing in Crimea, whether they are doing anything positive to move beyond their brutal behavior."

Turning to reports that Russia is lobbying the Trump administration to return the two compounds closed by former President Barack Obama in December in response to Moscow's election hacking, Woolsey said they only should be returned "for something that's more useful to you."

For the U.S., it should be strong economic sanctions on Russian banks or on other trade issues.

"You give them back, just push the pressure in different way."
