Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., wants President Donald Trump to clarify his wiretap claims following FBI Director James Comey's comments Monday saying there was "no information" to back the allegations, The Hill reported.

"I don't know if this changes the president's view, but I think the next question to the president, in light of this, is do you still maintain those claims?" Graham told reporters.

Comey made his statement during a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Trump claimed via tweet former President Barack Obama wiretapped his phones at Trump Tower during the election. He equated the alleged tapping to the Nixon/Watergate scandal and called it "McCarthyism."

Since then, the White House has backpedaled on the claims.

"He doesn't really think that President Obama went up and tapped his phone personally," White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said last Monday. "But I think there's no question that the Obama administration — that there were actions about surveillance and other activities that occurred in the 2016 election. That is a widely reported activity that occurred back then. The president used the word 'wiretapped' in quotes to mean, broadly, surveillance and other activities."

Comey said Monday, "it's pretty clear to me that the people in charge . . . have no evidence of it."
