White House Spokeswoman: Perez's Comments Show Why Dems Lost the Election

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez's outburst against Republicans is the "perfect example" about why his party lost control of the presidency, Congress, and most governors' mansions, Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday.

"I think Americans realized a long time ago that Washington elites like Tom Perez are completely out of touch, and they want somebody that can focus on jobs, focus on bringing hope back to this country," Sanders told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"[President] Donald Trump was the right messenger, and that's why he won."

On Friday, during an expletive-laced shot at the Republican Party, DNC Chairman Tom Perez called Trump a bully, criticized his visits to his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida, and praised the protesters who marched the day after Trump took office.

"This is exactly why they lost, and why Americans lost confidence in the Democrat Party and don't look to them for leadership," said Sanders. "They don't look to them for the party that brings jobs back, that secures our borders, secures our country.

"They're looking for Donald Trump to do that. That's why he won in a historic upset, and that's why he's successful in these first couple of months."

Sanders also on Monday defended the decision to send Trump's senior adviser Jared Kushner to visit Iraq along with chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford.

"When the chief invites you to see the progress that our troops are making, go," said Sanders. "That's exactly what's happening here. I know they just got on the ground within the hour, and I think he's looking forward to meeting with some of our troops and seeing the activity and progress that's happening on the ground."

Meanwhile, the Trump White House has a "huge week" ahead of it, including continuing his focus on jobs.

"Moving forward over the next several weeks, we have a heavy focus on foreign policy," said Sanders. "This is a president who takes national security extremely seriously. He wants to work with other countries on that, but also on trade and other things and this week is going to be a big part of that."

However, she complained that "most of the media" is ignoring a Fox News report that numerous private citizens connected with President Donald Trump's campaign team had been "unmasked" in intelligence information swept up in "incidental collection," and that the surveillance had been going on for some time.

"It's a huge story, and the fact that most of the media is ignoring it is absolutely, I wish I could say it is unbelievable but frankly, given the coverage we've had over the last several months, it really isn't," said Sanders.

"Thankfully some people are carrying the story and hopefully Americans will see exactly what has been talked about for the last several weeks, and that we can have a focus on one of these stories of substance. They've been obsessed with the idea of Russia, despite the fact that there is nothing there."
