A secretive group of wealthy Democratic Party supporters are at work in Florida pushing for liberal causes, according to a report in Capital New York.

The Florida Alliance group works out of a Terranova Corp. building in Miami Beach that its core group nicknamed, "The Fortress of Democracy."

The group's focus is on causes championed by progressive candidates, such as climate change, voting rights, and immigration reform.

Unions such as AFSCME and the Service Employee International Union are main sources of the group's funding. The money it uses is run through nonprofit organizations so the Alliance is not required to disclose its donors, a practice informally called "dark money."

Democratic donor Chris Findlater said that, the Florida investors "talk to each other and try to coordinate our funding."

Findlater said that the Florida Alliance's aim is to counter the influence of "big corporations and special interests" in Florida.

"We support progressive organizations who are creating a counter-balance," Findlader said in a statement to Politico.

Findlater helped build a similar group in Colorado. Both groups are spinoffs of the Democracy Alliance, who operate similarly for nationwide races.

The groups funded by the Alliance are part of a national 501(c)(4) called America Votes that is a "coordinating table" for progressive groups that operate nationally, such as labor unions and single-issue groups.

A recent campaign "Got Ethics?" is aimed at Republican senators and candidates to help Democrats gain traction there.

Democrats may be getting help in Florida, from the Republican candidate.

An analysis in New Republic said Republican primary winner Donald Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric is likely to be an unpopular stance with Florida voters in the national elections.
