A new report asks why Donald Trump has refused to release many of the documents that presidential candidates typically make public during their campaign, such as college transcripts, passport records, and tax returns.

The Washington Post writes that every major nominee from the Republican and Democratic parties since 1976 has made his or her tax returns public before the election. Clinton did so last summer, and she released her 2015 numbers Friday.

Trump has scoffed at making his financial records public several times, saying he was under audit and he was not allowed to release them.

The Post calls out Trump for bashing President Barack Obama for keeping a lid on things like his birth certificate while not releasing his own records that would display his transparency.

"The only people who want the tax returns are the people who want to defeat him," the Post quotes Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort as saying in May.

Some have wondered whether Trump has something to hide in his tax returns, whether it's the fact that he may not be worth as much as he claims to be or whether he has ties to foreign governments. Others think Trump might not be paying much in taxes.

Before the 2012 presidential election, Trump urged Republican candidate Mitt Romney to release his own tax returns, which he did. Trump recently said that may have been Romney's downfall on election day, since they showed his tax rate was lower than people thought.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Trump's vice presidential pick, has not released his tax returns either.
