President Donald Trump's comments in a leaked transcript of phone calls with foreign leaders show he's trying to save his reputation with his supporters, former Mexican President Vicente Fox said Friday.

Fox referenced a transcript obtained by The Washington Post of a phone call between Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto in which the commander in chief appeared to hedge on a campaign promise to build a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

"What Trump is trying to do is save face in front of his voters," Fox told CNN's "New Day" program. "He's not looking after America and the great Americans, it's that he's trying to save face."

"Civilized people," he continued, should work together to solve issues. "We speak, we negotiate, we come to an agreement. We don't try to impose our will."

Fox has been a frequent Trump critic. On Monday, he sent a tweet comparing the White House to the TV show "Survivor."

And in January, he said the Trump administration "better understand that we are not paying for that wall."
