McAuliffe Pledges Support for Va. Primary Winner

RICHMOND, Va. -- After losing in Virginia's primary for governor, former Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe is pledging to do whatever he can to help the man who beat him.

State Sen. Creigh Deeds took nearly 50 percent of the vote in Tuesday's three-way Democratic primary. He'll take on Republican Bob McDonnell in a high-stakes general election this fall.

Deeds, former Democratic rivals McAuliffe and Brian Moran, and Gov. Tim Kaine, who is the current Democratic national chairman, appeared together Wednesday to back the new nominee.

Not only did it bring the promise of substantial national party cash from Kaine, but also a personal pledge from McAuliffe to "do personally anything Creigh Deeds asks me do."
