SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco lawmakers are set to vote on a measure that would snuff out new shops that sell paraphernalia often used by pot smokers in the district at the heart of the city's hippie history.
Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi's ordinance to be voted on Tuesday would place a three-year moratorium on new businesses in the Haight that sell the smoking equipment.
At least a dozen businesses sell rolling papers, roach clips and glass water pipes along Haight Street, a popular destination for tourists nostalgic for the Summer of Love.
Mirkarimi says that while the shops have a place in the Haight, the businesses are crowding out other stores that serve the needs of neighborhood residents.
The ban would not affect existing shops.
