Cornyn, Democrat Alameel Meet in Only Debate

Friday, 24 Oct 2014 09:35 PM

Problems with the nation's immigration system have dominated a debate between U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and Democratic challenger David Alameel.

During Friday's debate, Alameel touted comprehensive immigration system changes as the cure for most of the ills faced by Hispanics in the U.S., even those in the country legally. Alameel cited the Republican Party, with its House majority, as the biggest obstacle to an overhaul.

But Cornyn said the crisis of confidence between Republican members of Congress and the Democratic leadership in the White House and Senate stands in the way of an overhaul. He endorsed a step-by-step approach to changing the system.

The debate at Mountain View College in Dallas was the only one scheduled between the candidates. It was sponsored by Univision and streamed live on the Internet.
