Senate Democrats need to flip four seats to take back the majority in the upper house, but they have their eye on something bigger — a net gain of nine seats.

The first part of their optimism is math; Republicans have 24 seats to defend just 10 for Democrats.

"If you believe that Clinton retains advantage in the presidential race … then I think by extension you have to also believe that Democrats are better than 50-50 to take back the Senate," Kyle Kondik, a political handicapper told The Hill.

But secondarily, Dems think their instrument of choice — the anti-Trump card — is going to pay big dividends on Election Day. It's a tactic Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is cautioning against.

McConnell told Newsmax TV that Trump's rhetoric toward Hispanics could have the same devastating effect as Barry Goldwater's did against African Americans in 1964.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee launched "Party of Trump" ads in battleground states in March, tying vulnerable GOP candidates to the GOP nominee.

For Republicans to retain the majority, the Hill reports, GOP candidates would have to outpace Trump in states that President Barack Obama carried in both 2008 and 2012.

However, the silver lining for Republicans is that Hillary Clinton isn't polling at levels that would suggest she can deliver Senate seats for Democrats.

Jennifer Duffy of the Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan handicapper, told the Hill that Democrats are "probably" favored to take back the majority but said, "I'm not yet convinced it's the blood bath they believe it is."
