President Barack Obama says policies that ease financial and other burdens on women will help make the economy stronger overall.

Obama is delivering that message in Providence, Rhode Island, four days before midterm elections in which Democrats are hoping for a strong turnout among women. He's also touting economic growth since the recession at the beginning of his presidency.

Obama notes that paid family leave is the law in Rhode Island. He says policies like that make it possible for women to stay home with a sick child or parent without losing pay.

Noting that women make up about half of the U.S. workforce, Obama says women also need better child-care policies and equal pay for equal work.

He says everyone benefits when women do well.
