Lieberman to Serve as Co-chair of No Labels

Monday, 10 Nov 2014 11:32 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — No Labels, a bipartisan group that has sought government reforms, on Monday named former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman as its new honorary co-chair.

Lieberman, who retired from the Senate in 2013, is taking the post after Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia stepped down last week. Lieberman joins former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman as co-chairman of the group, which has pushed for a series of reforms in Congress to address gridlock and dysfunctional politics.

"We are getting closer, as a nation, to healing our divisions and working together, but we have a long way to go," Lieberman said in a statement. He said the 2016 presidential elections would offer a great opportunity to "focus on problem-solving and No Labels is the only group that can make that happen."

Manchin stepped down from the co-chair post last week because he said he was upset No Labels backed Republican Rep. Cory Gardner against Democratic Sen. Mark Udall in Colorado's competitive Senate race. Manchin said the group did not communicate their plans to him beforehand about the race, which Gardner won.

No Labels has worked with Huntsman, a former 2012 GOP presidential candidate, to promote several bipartisan policy items ahead of early 2016 presidential contests in Iowa and New Hampshire. The agenda includes job creation, a balanced federal budget, securing Medicare and Social Security and energy independence.

Lieberman, who was first elected to the Senate in 1988, was Democrat Al Gore's running mate in the 2000 presidential campaign but re-elected to the Senate as an independent in 2006.
