A group of senators wants to block a Justice Department proposal that they say would make it too easy for the government to hack into computers during investigations.

The proposal would change a federal rule governing how search warrants are obtained. That rule generally requires warrants to be approved in the jurisdiction where the property is located.

But the Justice Department says that requirement isn't practical in complex computer crime cases where investigators don't know the location of the device they want to search.

The proposed change would permit warrants to be approved by judges even when investigators can't locate the computer.

The senators say that raises major privacy and civil liberties issues. They're concerned that judges could authorize sweeping searches of many computers on a single warrant.
