Secret Service to Take Over Carson's Security Wednesday

Monday, 09 Nov 2015 07:27 PM

Republican presidential contender Ben Carson will begin receiving Secret Service protection this week.

A Carson aide says the Secret Service will take over security for the campaign beginning Wednesday morning. That will dramatically increase security for Carson's appearance that day at Liberty University in Virginia.

The aide spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal security issues.

The Department of Homeland Security previously announced that Carson and fellow Republican Donald Trump would receive Secret Service protection. The start date was unknown.

A Trump spokesman did not immediately respond to questions about the timing for his campaign. None of the other Republican candidates have Secret Service protection, which is paid for by taxpayers.

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, as a former first lady, has long had Secret Service protection.
