The AFL-CIO and more than 100 other liberal organizations are pressing to have Andrew Puzder's nomination to be secretary of labor tossed out because he once hired an illegal immigrant to work as a housekeeper.

The Hill obtained a letter signed by the AFL-CIO — the largest labor union in the United States — along with Service Employees International Union, Communications Workers of America, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and 124 other groups.

"The undersigned call on the Trump administration to withdraw the nomination of Mr. Puzder at once, and find a suitable nominee who shows proper respect for working people and our nation's employment laws," reads the letter.

Puzder's nomination process has been messy amid reports that he hired the aforementioned housekeeper and also conflicts of interest that he may have if he works in President Donald Trump's administration.

Puzder is the CEO of CKE Restaurants Inc., which owns burger chain Carl's Jr. and other fast-food restaurants.

"Mr. Puzder is an experienced attorney and a CEO of a major fast-food chain, so he cannot plausibly claim ignorance of his legal obligations as an employer," the letter reads.

Puzder's confirmation hearing is scheduled for Feb. 16.
