Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham praised Ukrainian marines and criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin in a recent trip to Ukraine, Politico reported.

"I admire the fact that you will fight for your homeland," Graham said during a visit Saturday with Ukraine's 36th Separate Marine Brigade. Graham can be heard on a video released Monday by the Ukraine president's office.

"Your fight is our fight," Graham says on the video as he stands beside President Petro Poroshenko. "2017 will be the year of offense. All of us will go back to Washington, and we will push the case against Russia. Enough of a Russian aggression. It is time for them to pay a heavier price. Our fight is not with the Russian people, but with Putin.

"Our promise to you is to take your cause to Washington, inform the American people of your bravery, and make the case against Putin to the world."

"I believe you will win," McCain told the marines. "I am convinced you will win, and we will do everything we can to provide you with what you need to win. We have succeeded not because of equipment, but because of your courage. So, I thank you, and the world is watching, and the world is watching because we cannot allow Vladimir Putin to succeed here, because if he succeeds here, he will succeed in other countries."

The senators' criticisms of Putin are at contrast with Republican President-elect Donald Trump, who has reached out to Putin in recent days, even as intelligence reports have indicated Russian hackers attempted to affect the presidential election.

Trump said outside a New Year's Eve party at his Mar-a-Lago resort it is impossible to know for certain who was behind the hacking that exposed the email communications of Democrats.

Graham and McCain were joined on the trip through the former Soviet Union by Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is not heard on the video. The purpose of the trip was to assure American allies in the region they have support in Washington against Russian aggression.
