Donald Trump has launched a low-key effort to get the Republican establishment on his side as the billionaire businessman nears clinching the GOP presidential nomination, The New York Times reports.

Trump is attempting to persuade party officials. "He understands there are certain norms even he needs to follow as the Republican nominee," The Times says.

He also wants the wary GOP elite to believe he can grow "an organization and infrastructure that can sustain a costly general election campaign."

The newspaper says Trump's congressional team has held meetings with lawmakers on Capitol Hill every Thursday when Congress is in session.

Trump's campaign on Thursday named Steven Mnuchin, CEO of investment firm Dune Capital, as its national finance chairman.
