A former Republican congressman who voted to impeach then-President Bill Clinton in 1998 told CNN that President Donald Trump's situation "is much more serious."

Former South Carolina Rep. Bob Inglis made his remarks after CNN International host Christiane Amanpour played an archive clip from 1998 in which Inglis said that "The leader of the free world needs moral authority. And we've got a president who is sorely lacking in that regard."

Inglis was asked how he measured Clinton's "lack of moral authority" to Trump.

"Well, I guess that young guy you were just playing there apparently hadn't seen something called the Donald Trump show, because this is much more serious than anything we ever accused Bill Clinton of."

Inglis stressed that Trump's situation "is something quite different, particularly when it gets into the Russia investigation and the firing of [former FBI Director] James Comey. These are very serious matters."

Inglis added that the president's "juvenile attacks on the media" are "demeaning the office and demeaning our country."

"It is not healthy for the republic … to fawn all over the president like they do at 'Fox and Friends.' We can't allow this to be normal. This is not normal behavior. … It is not acceptable," Inglis told CNN.

"The United States is in the process of taking a real hit to our brand," Inglis said. "We presumed to be the leader of the free world. To have a president who isn't terribly focused on issues of substance but rather settling personal scores … is pretty shocking to the whole world."

Although Inglis conceded that some might think that Trump's erratic and unpredictable behavior might confuse American enemies, the real danger is that for U.S. allies "it really is worrisome if you are counting on the United States to be the stable force in the world."
