President Donald Trump is pushing Florida Gov. Rick Scott to challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in 2018, Politico reports.

And it appears that Scott, a loyal Trump ally is likely to enter the race, according to the website.

Trump and Scott have known each other for about 20 years and talk by phone about once a week, two sources told Politico.

"We need you in the Senate. We need business guy like you," Trump is quoted as telling Scott by one Politico source who paraphrased the conversation.

Scott will leave office in 2018 when his term as governor expires. It has been widely speculated he would run for the Senate.

The Florida governor had backed Trump's presidency throughout the campaign. He chaired a super PAC that promoted Trump's candidacy, praised Trump in a USA Today column and spoke on his behalf at the Republican National Convention.

A Scott candidacy would be welcomed by Republicans, who are intent on expanding their majority in the Senate, the website reported. Nelson, the only statewide elected Democrat in Florida, has been openly critical of Trump.

For now, Scott appears noncommittal in terms of opposing Nelson.

He noted after the November election that going up against Nelson is "an option I have. But right now, my whole focus in how do I do my best job as governor."

And Politico noted he declined to comment when contacted for the story.

"If Trump is a disaster, the midterms will favor Nelson, especially because Scott has so closely hitched his wagon to Trump." Politico quoted Steve Vancore, a Florida pollster who often works for Democrats.

But "Scott will be extremely tough because he is an experienced campaigner and can easily raise jaw-dropping amounts of money. Tough race. Too soon to tell."

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Times reported Scott is widely considered to be prepping for a Senate run, but is not expected to make any announcement in the near future.

"I'm in no rush," the Florida governor told the newspaper. "I like this job a lot."
