Donald Trump defended his "tough tone," telling The Wall Street Journal he has the right temperament to be commander in chief, in an interview regarding national security.

Hillary Clinton has been on the offensive as of late, trying to paint Trump as someone reckless and impulsive whose not to be trusted with nuclear launch codes and the responsible national security of the country.

"She likes to equate toughness with temperament and she thinks she's gonna scare people," Trump told the Journal. "Well, we need to have a tough tone."

Clinton has been emboldened by a poll showing that just 27 percent of registered voters think Trump has the right personality to be commander in chief, compared to 48 percent who believe she does, The New York Times reports.

But Trump turned the tables on Clinton, telling the Journal, "She is grossly incompetent when it comes to national security. And ISIS sits back and laughs at her."

Trump also dismissed as irrelevant taking an overseas trip prior to the election. Though he says he has been invited by "numerous countries, to visit," Trump stuck to his platform agenda of America first.

"I don't think it registers with the voters to be honest with you," Trump told the Journal. "What I really want to do is focus on our country and the election, but I might."
