Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum told President-elect Donald Trump not to consider him for a cabinet position, and questions his choice to lead the State Department over his views on climate change.

"I sort of cut off that conversation before it really got started," the former senator told Rita Cosby on WABC Radio in New York, "and said, you know, my work is going to be on the outside, not the inside."

Santorum, a member of Trump’s religious council, cited family commitments after meeting with the president-elect at Trump Tower in New York City.

He revealed to Cosby that he first told Trump about his lack of interest in a cabinet position only a few days after the election.

"I called him to congratulate him, obviously, for his tremendous victory," the former senator told host Rita Cosby.

He said he "made it clear at that point, as we were discussing things and the future of his administration, that while, you know, it would be very flattering to be involved in his administration, I really wasn't in a position right now with my family and my life to do something like that, but I would do what I could throughout this process to advise him to make sure that he was doing… delivering on the things that I know he cares about, which is creating opportunities for all Americans."

Santorum told Trump that he will continue to offer his suggestions on policies and cabinet choices.

The former presidential candidate proceeded bashed Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State, Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson, over "the global warming issue."

"Well, Exxon has been… let’s just say, involved in the climate change discussion, accepting the alarmist view of climate change, and suggesting things like carbon taxes and the like," Santorum said.

"I find that concerning for someone who is going to be involved in international treaties where these types of issues are front and center, and the Obama administration clearly has been pushing this through the State Department, through John Kerry.

“So, you say, ‘Well, what’s climate change have to do with Secretary of State?’ A lot. Because these are international agreements and so, I am concerned, you know, whether he had… if… had he put someone like he did at EPA with Scott Pruitt, then, you know, that to me is a great pick, because it’s consistent with what he is talking about in the campaign. Tillerson raises questions."
