Trump Slams WashPost Book; Authors Praise Him as 'Charming'

MSNBC's "Morning Joe"

Donald Trump on Tuesday slammed the writers and researchers behind a new book The Washington Post has written about him, but the journalists who wrote the book praised him "incredibly generous and gracious" while they were conducting their interviews.

"We talked to him for more than 20 hours," Washington Post senior editor Marc Fisher, who co-authored the new book, "Trump Revealed: An American Journey of Ambition, Ego, Money, and Power" with investigative reporter Michael Kranish, told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "He was incredibly generous and gracious, and exactly the opposite of banning the Washington Post, banning other news organizations. He wanted to tell the story, and he wanted to tell it in part because of stuff about his youth and family we didn't know."

Fisher said Trump is also "very charming" and knowledgeable about business.

"He can talk about the building materials he used on a project in 1978," said Fisher. "He's incurious about the world beyond his business, so he's not a guy who reads much. He's not a guy who reads up on things going on in the world. He watches a lot of television."

Trump, though, tweeted a slam against the book just before the two authors came on the air:

Kranish, though, said the investigation was "really interesting," and the Post was able to explore a series of financial difficulties Trump had experienced.

"There were six corporate bankruptcies, not four," Kranish said. "His public company, shares at one point were $35 and went to 17 cents. That company lost a lot of money but paid him millions of dollars. It was a roller coaster."

Kranish said that during their interviews with Trump, they asked him about his changing political opinions, and the book even contains a chapter, "Political Chameleon."

"The reason it's a chapter title, he did change party seven times, Democrat, Republican, independent, running for president under different party labels, for mayor, governor," said Kranish. "His response was as a business person. 'I had to deal with politicians all the time and I wanted them to be my friend.' He looked at the situation that day."

And Trump believes most of all in "winning. He believes in himself. He believes in success. He believes that he is a man of the people," said Fisher.
