President Donald Trump and his aides are pushing to "remake" U.S. immigration policy to fit a nationalist ideology that sees many foreigners as harmful to society, The Washington Post reports.

"To Trump, the goal is to protect American workers by slashing immigration levels and limiting competitors he views as taking jobs and suppressing wages," The Post's David Nakamura writes.

He says Trump sees a new immigration system stopping entry to foreigners who cannot "support themselves financially."

According to The Post, the ideology behind this approach is "rooted in the worldviews of White House chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon and senior policy adviser Stephen Miller, as well as Attorney General Jeff Sessions."

Trump has told lawmakers that he wants to see a "merit-based" approach to immigration.

The newspaper says if that approach is enacted, it "could significantly reshape the nation's demographics and have long-lasting economic implications."
