With President Trump comes a new opportunity for healthcare reform. The Affordable Healthcare Act, also known as Obamacare, has failed to meet the needs of many Americans and caused skyrocketing costs to policyholders and institutions.

President Donald J. Trump can repeal Obamacare and implement The Trump Healthcare Reform Act which would jump-start savings for all Americans. He could improve access to millions of Americans and reduce the cost of healthcare by removing the hidden taxes in Obamacare.

Some of these steps could include:

• A nationwide plan where all health insurance premium payments are fully tax deductible and all citizens would have a base product, regardless of state or zip code. The only difference being state taxes and ancillary products purchased by the policyholder.

• Raise Healthcare Savings Account (HSA) limits to meet the current level of the policyholder’s deductible and over the counter drugs and medical supplies. This would also incentivize Americans to save by using pre-tax wages for medical expenses which could reduce prices nationally.

• Allow for the coverage of children under their parents’ plans until age 26.

• Include a pre-existing condition sign up period (e.g. 24 months). This would immediately ensure coverage for Americans currently with pre-existing conditions.

• Develop a healthcare partnership to facilitate communication between healthcare providers, insurance companies, and the White House to correct one of the main complaints from industry professionals about Obamacare.

• Remove the Employer Mandate and the Employer Penalty for businesses over 50 lives. Not all industries or businesses are structured to handle mandated employee benefits, and the penalty incurred for not offering a healthcare program can hurt a business’s flexibility in employment options.

• Allow small businesses to keep their pre-Obamacare plans. My company recently helped a small business adjust their policy, and if Obamacare is repealed, their policy would be $340.93 less per employee and $688.84 less per whole family plan a month. Small companies need to be able to compete with larger organizations, and Obamacare costs small businesses resources and jobs.

• Implement a requirement that prescription drugs sold in America are sold at the lowest price they are sold globally. This would ensure that prescription drug users in America are not subsidizing the costs of drugs in other countries. Last week, I paid $210.37 for a small salve and $160 plus for Tobradex eye drops at Walgreens. How can someone under our current system making less than $60,000 afford to pay for their drugs? We only have one set of eyes — we can’t be forced to choose between our wallet and our sight.

• Remove the Carrier Tax that has been levied on the insurance companies. The tax was meant to raise funds from the insurance companies but instead was passed on to the American public.

• Adjust government employee plans to be processed under the Veteran Affairs, but still allow them to choose their own facilities and doctors, thereby reducing the number of frivolous lawsuits.

These suggestions could assist President Donald J. Trump in achieving his goal of repealing and replacing Obamacare and implement the new Trump Healthcare Reform Act, this would benefit all Americans by lowering the cost of insurance and prescription drugs and… Make America Healthy Again.
