President Donald Trump told former national security adviser Michael Flynn to "stay strong" as federal investigators look into his foreign ties, Yahoo News reports.

"I just got a message from the president to stay strong," the retired general told a group of friends and supporters at a restaurant in Virginia on April 25, according to unnamed sources close to Flynn.

Those sources also said that Flynn has maintained his loyalty to Trump, and will not accept any kind of deal for leniency in exchange for flipping on the president.

Earlier that day, the chairman and ranking member of the House Oversight Committee had accused Flynn of breaching a federal law by failing to disclose foreign income from Russia and Turkey.

"Personally I see no evidence or no data to support the notion that General Flynn complied with the law," chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told reporters, according to The Washington Post.

"He was supposed to get permission, he was supposed to report it, and he didn't. This is a major problem," added Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., the ranking member.

Although Yahoo News could not confirm how Trump relayed this message to Flynn, his ongoing support for his fired adviser has become a source of controversy.

The president reportedly asked former FBI Director James Comey to end the investigation shortly before firing him.

The White House denied this claim in a statement.

"While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn," the White House said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
