President Donald Trump has started filing the necessary documents to remove his name as the top executive of his vast business empire, NPR reports.

Trump is making good on a pledge to leave management of his companies. Paperwork filed in Florida on Monday shows his son, Eric Trump, as president of Trump International Hotels Management LLC. Last year, Donald J. Trump had been listed as company president, according to NPR.

NPR reported that numerous other documents appearing online on Monday confirmed the management shift. However, it noted the filings replaced Donald Trump as the top executive and don't show a change in ownership.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Trump has "resigned from the company as he said he would before he took office," adding "he's taken extraordinary steps to ensure that that's happened."

NBC News reported that a Trump aide said the president has resigned from his namesake company and transferred title, management and authority to a trust under the control of his sons Donald Trump Jr., Eric and Allen Weisselberg, chief financial officer of the Trump Organization.

The aide provided a resignation letter dated Jan. 19 and signed by Trump, along with a list of hundreds of companies that he had left.

But the move has not silenced some of his critics.

A liberal government watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, filed suit against Trump, arguing in federal court that he violated the Constitution by not divesting from the Trump Organization and other interests with leases, bookings, payments and deals connected to foreign governments, the network news noted.
