Donald Trump's former campaign staffers say they discovered the formula to limit his use of Twitter, Politico is reporting.

Six former campaign officials said the key was to make sure he read a daily dose of media reports praising him. And, they said when no such praise was available, they would turn to friendly outlets to drum some up, according to Politico.

"If candidate Trump was upset about unfair coverage, it was productive to show him that he was getting fair coverage from outlets that were persuadable," former communications director Sam Nunberg is quoted by the website.

"The same media that our base digests and prefers is going to be the base for his support. I would assume the president would like see positive and preferential treatment from those outlets and that would help the operation overall."

Staffers told Politico that Trump seldom read anything online and preferred newspapers.

His go-to publication was The New York Times and reading material his staff left on his desk. He was also a near-nonstop viewer of cable news.

Politico noted his staff's efforts did not always stop Trump from tweeting.

But they noted when Trump became involved in a Twitter war with the father of a slain Muslim U.S. soldier in Iraq, the staff set up a meeting with Gold Star Mothers of Florida and made sure that friendly media knew about it.

Once the stories were published, staffers made certain Trump was aware of them.

They used the same plan on other issues that cropped up from time-to-time during the campaign to steer him away from topics that could find their way to his Twitter account.

But they note Trump is now adjusting to life in the White House and has plenty of time on his hands in the evenings and early morning as his wife, Melania, spends time in New York with their son Barron, who is finishing the school year.

Trump "has plenty of time to stew over negative reviews," the website points out.

The Hill noted Trump has continued his feud with the media since assuming office.

In a tweet last week, Trump called the "fake news media" the "enemy of the American people," The Hill pointed out.
