President Donald Trump's slogan of "buying American" is supported by almost three-fourths of those in the United States in theory, but in practice shoppers mainly base their purchases on the cost of the item, CNN reported on Monday.

As A.T. Kearney consulting firm partner Greg Portell told CNN, "Consumers are all for Made in America until they have to pay for it."

Survey after survey shows this to be the case, such as one conducted last year by AP-GfK, which concluded that although some 75 percent say they would like to buy American products, about 67 percent end up buying cheaper, foreign-made items.

Although other studies have indicated that the quality of a product is also considered in the purchase, for most items Americans are not willing to pay a premium for something made in the U.S.

Even while Trump as a politician has preached his "buy American" slogan often and used it extensively during the campaign, as a businessman he also has some of his own clothing line made abroad.

He did this for the same reason that other businessmen do it, which is the fact that it is much cheaper to produce almost all items overseas.

The other side of the coin of "buy American" is Trump's stated goal of bringing jobs back to the U.S., but many experts say that misrepresents the problem of lost jobs in the United States.

According to a Ball State University study, as much as 88 percent of manufacturing job losses in the last decade were due not to a plant relocating overseas, but to automation.
