President Donald Trump encouraged his proposed hikes in defense spending in his weekly address Friday aboard the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford.

Trump, wearing a Navy jacket and baseball cap adorned with the name and image of the ship, touted the size and importance of the nation's military.

"My budget will give America's armed forces the resources they need to achieve full and total military preparedness to meet any and all global challenges and meet them we will," the president said. "Investing in the military means investing in peace because the best way to prevent war, as President George Washington said, is to be prepared for it."

He added that the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford, which he pointed out is the highest-priced warship ever constructed, "represents the future of naval aviation and ... will serve as a cornerstone of our national defense for decades and decades to come."

The president delivered a speech on Thursday about the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford, where he outlined his plan for a $54 billion defense spending increase.

"We are going to have very soon the finest equipment in the world," Trump said, according to The Hill. "We will give our military the tools you need to prevent war, and if required to fight war and only to do one thing. You know what that is? Win. Win. We're going to start winning again."
