Republican nominee Donald Trump lashed out at former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, but only referred to him as "a very little guy" rather than saying his name.

"I was going to hit one guy in particular, a very little guy," Trump told a crowd in Davenport, Iowa, on Thursday. "I was going to hit this guy so hard his head would spin, he wouldn't know what the hell happened."

Trump avoided naming the "little guy," but The New York Times reports that he was likely referring to Bloomberg, who blasted the former reality TV star's campaign in a speech to the Democratic National Convention. First elected as a Republican, Bloomberg served three terms in city hall and has flirted with his own presidential bid.

"I'm a New Yorker and New Yorkers know a con when we see one," Bloomberg said on Wednesday night, while endorsing Hillary Clinton. "The bottom line is: Trump is a risky, reckless, and radical choice."

"He came out of nowhere," Trump said Thursday. "He made deals with me. 'Will you help me with this? Would you make this deal and solve the problem?' I solved the problem. I do a great job."

During an appearance on CNN in January, Trump was asked about Bloomberg, who was considering a third-party presidential run, as a potential opponent.

"We used to be friends," Trump said. "I guess we're not friends anymore. I don't think we are. We used to be friends. Good friends."

But Bloomberg aides dispute that contention.

"I've been by Mike's side for 19 years, and I've never met Donald Trump," Kevin Sheekey, an adviser to Bloomberg, told the Times in response to Trump's claims of friendship.

"Trump hasn't been part of the business, political or charitable community since the Koch administration. The only place Mike and Donald would have seen each other is on a golf course or on a TV set."

Former Mayor Ed Koch, a Democrat, led the city from 1978 to 1990.

CNN Host Wolf Blitzer mentioned that while Trump values himself at $10 billion, Bloomberg is worth considerably more at an estimated $36.5 billion.

"Yeah, I don't believe that," Trump said about Bloomberg's worth. "I don't believe that."

When asked how much he thought the former mayor was worth, Trump said he had no idea.

"Trump says he wants to run the nation like he's run his business," Bloomberg said Wednesday. "God help us."
