Just 33 percent of voters approve of the job President Donald Trump is doing as commander in chief, while 61 percent disapprove, a new Quinnipiac University poll reveals.

Here are the survey highlights:

  • Those who say he is not honest: 62-34 percent.
  • Those who believe he does not have good leadership skills: 63-34 percent.
  • Those who say he does not care about average Americans: 59-39 percent.
  • Those who believe he is not level-headed: 59-39 percent.
  • Those who say he is a strong person: 58-39 percent.
  • Those who believe he is intelligent: 58-39 percent.

"It's hard to pick what is the most alarming number in the troubling trail of new lows for President Donald Trump," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"Profound embarrassment over his performance in office and deepening concern over his level-headedness have to raise the biggest red flags.

"The daily drip, drip of missteps and firings and discord are generating a tidal wave of bad polling numbers. Is there a wall big enough to hold it back?"

However, the survey shows Trump still has strong backing from Republicans. Seventy-six percent approve of the way Trump is handling his job. By comparison, only 2 percent of Democrats and 34 percent of independents approve of his job performance.

The poll, which was conducted July 27-Aug. 1, surveyed 1,125 voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
