Sen. Tom Cotton: Schumer, Dem Cabinet Delays 'Unprecedented'

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democrats in his conference have been trying to delay votes for President Donald Trump's cabinet nominees in an "unprecedented fashion" at a time when critical national security positions are remaining unfilled, Sen. Tom Cotton said Wednesday morning.

"On Friday we should have voted on Mike Pompeo to be the director of the CIA," the Arkansas Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program. "I look forward to confirming these nominees hopefully quickly. We could only start on Friday once the president was sworn in, but as the days go by, the momentum behind these nominations is going to grow.

"And if it takes 24 hour around the clock votes, then that's what I'm committed to doing to make sure we get President Trump's cabinet in position."

Last Friday, it was believed there was an agreement to vote for Rep. Mike Pompeo to head the CIA, said Cotton, who got into a shouting match with Schumer on Monday over the delays but the vote didn't happen.

"Sen. Schumer said he had only spoken for himself, not for his entire conference," Cotton said of the New York Democrat. "I hope as he gets a little more experience under his belt as the leader is he able to keep control of his conference."

Schumer eventually voted for Pompeo, said Cotton, and eventually the Kansas lawmaker received 66 votes on Monday, "which is even more than Barack Obama's last CIA director got."

There was no reason to delay that vote, or for that matter, Rex Tillerson's confirmation for secretary of state, said Cotton.

Cotton further lauded Trump for his quick actions and executive orders, saying he thinks the new president is having a "much better start" compared to Obama's last eight years.

"Just yesterday he finally advanced the Keystone pipeline and the Dakota Access pipeline," said Cotton. "[These are] pipelines that should have been constructed years ago to provide thousands of good paying American jobs as well as low cost affordable energy."

Trump will also be issuing further executive actions on immigration and on getting the border with Mexico under control, said Cotton, and he's looking forward to introducing legislation to address these and other issues on immigration.

"Our immigration levels are too high and we need to get control of them so wages can go up in this country, so folks who are American citizens can get jobs," the senator said.
