Special counsel Robert Mueller has never worked on a case like the investigation into alleged Russia ties with President Donald Trump's campaign and the "high-profile investigator" will likely prove to be a vital concern for the Trump presidency, according to a Time Magazine's David Von Drehle.

"As special counsel appointed in the wake of the (former FBI Director James) Comey firing, Mueller has one job, no deadline and bottomless resources, and he is assembling an all-star team of veteran prosecutors whose expert backgrounds go beyond counterintelligence to include money laundering, corporate fraud, and the limits of executive branch power," writes Drehle.

Mueller's investigation could end up beyond the Trump administration and into his private businesses, because "investigations like Mueller's have a way of moving from Topic A to Topic Z."

The special counsel comes to the job with praise for his tenure as FBI director from 2001 to 2013. No one in that role in recent years "has had a greater positive impact on the bureau than Mueller," FBI historian Ronald Kessler said in the Time piece.

Trump is in a "yawning abyss" of his own making with the probe, writes Drehle, "but the president won't go through it alone. The whole country will be dragged along."

Whether Trump's foes and supporters can find common ground as the probe gets resolved is a question Mueller and the president must act on and "Mueller must be careful and measured and honest and open. If he finds offenses, he must lay them out clearly, with every t crossed. If he finds none, he must issue equally clear and compelling exonerations," Drehle wrote.

Adding that, "America is hungry for fair dealers: Mueller can do his part by proving himself to be one."
