Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said Tuesday the investigation into reports of Russian election interference has gone "beyond obstruction of justice… moving into perjury, false statements and even potentially treason."

Kaine, former running mate to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, made his remark to reporters following The New York Times report claiming that last summer, President Donald Trump's eldest son met with a Russian attorney who offered him incriminating information on Clinton as part of the Russian government's effort to help Trump's election.

"The investigation — it's not, nothing is proven yet, but we're now beyond obstruction of justice in terms of what's being investigated," Kaine said, according to The Hill.

"This is moving into perjury, false statements and even potentially treason."

Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., later Tuesday tweeted a series of emails showing his correspondence with a "Russian government attorney" in June of last year.

In an email from an intermediary, music publicist Rob Goldstone, Donald Trump Jr. was offered documents that "would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father."

He added that "this is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump."
