Sen. Tim Kaine Rebukes 'Ridiculous' Trump Tweet Over US-Russia Relations

Former Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine on Thursday punched back at President Donald Trump over his Russia tweet and disagreed with a peer over healthcare.

Kaine first dismissed Trump's tweet accusing Congress of the "dangerous low" point the U.S. has with Russia as a guest on CNN's "New Day" morning program.

"That presidential tweet is ridiculous," the Virginia senator said.

"The relationship is at a low because Vladimir Putin is invading sovereign nations, attacking American, Montenegron, French elections, is violating missile treaties and doing all kinds of negative things," Kaine said.

"For the president to not call out Russia on that and say the relationship is low because of Congress, why does he keep thinking he needs to be Vladimir Putin's defense lawyer and take pressure off him and not call him out for bad behavior and pretend it's Congress' fault? It's a head scratcher.

"He is clearly deeply insecure about the ongoing Russia investigation that's being conducted by the special prosecutor [Robert] Mueller," Kaine said. "These investigations, clearly he finds them very threatening, so he's always pushing back against them in one way or the other.

"But for him to say it's Congress' fault that the relationship is at a low point is just flat wrong," he added.

Kaine also said he disagrees with Sen. Bernie Sanders on healthcare; the Vermont independent is expected to unveil a single-payer bill soon.

"I have a different view. I want people to have more options, not fewer," Kaine said. "I would like to explore a circumstance under which there would be a public option like a Medicare party for everybody that you'd have to buy into.

"I think if you provide an additional option, it would bring prices down. Since Medicare operates in every zip code in the country, you wouldn't have counties or cities where there wasn't competition," Kaine said.
