Virginia Republicans are fighting back against the Old Dominion’s Democratic governor who wants to place tough restrictions on guns, accusing him of violating Second Amendment constitutional rights.

State Sen. Dick Black claims Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a political ally of Bill and Hillary Clinton, has developed a legislative package to "restrict the gun rights of law-abiding Virginians."

Writing on the Bull Elephant blog, a Virginia conservative website, Black noted that McAuliffe "heavily courted" former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who leads a national gun-control campaign, during the 2013 gubernatorial election in Virginia.

"Bloomberg dumped over a million dollars into the race," Black, who represents parts of Northern Virginia, wrote. "Governor McAuliffe never hid his disdain for gun rights.

Politico reported that "McAuliffe is unapologetic about his support for stricter gun laws, including an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, limiting the size of magazines and preventing people from buying more than one gun a month." It went on to say that "he would unquestionably be a close Bloomberg ally should he win."

McAuliffe on Monday announced a broad package of gun-control measures he wants the Republican-controlled Legislature to take up next month. His measures include reinstating a ban on the purchase of more than one gun a month, denying concealed-carry permits to parents who fail to pay child support, and requiring private vendors at gun shows to conduct criminal-background checks.

Black, a Marine helicopter combat pilot in the Vietnam War, issued a call for action for Virginia gun owners.

"I am calling on all law-abiding gun owners to stand up for your rights and contact your representatives today to stop the erosion of our rights and freedoms given to us by the Founding Fathers. They fought to grant us these rights and now we need to fight to keep them," he wrote.

McAuliffe is a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He was co-chairman of President Clinton’s re-election campaign in 1996 and chaired Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
