Nearly 66 percent of Americans said that Supreme Court justices should have term limits in a new national survey released Wednesday.

Here are the results of the McLaughlin and Associates/Fix the Court poll of 1,000 likely voters conducted Dec. 3-7:

Do you support term limits for Supreme Court justices?

  • Yes: 65.8 percent.
  • No: 16.2 percent.
  • Don't know: 18 percent.

Would you support 18-year fixed terms for justices?

  • Yes: 62.6 percent.
  • No: 15.6 percent.
  • Don't know: 21.7 percent.

In other results:

Who did you vote for in the November election?

  • Hillary Clinton: 42 percent.
  • Donald Trump: 41.7 percent.
  • Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson: 4.9 percent.
  • Green Party candidate Jill Stein: 2.3 percent.

Among Trump supporters on SCOTUS issues:

Support term limits?

  • Yes: 73.7 percent.
  • No: 12.1 percent.
  • Don't know: 14.2 percent.

Support 18-year fixed terms?

  • Yes: 68.9 percent.
  • No: 11.3 percent.
  • Don't know: 19.7 percent.

"The president-elect said time and again that he wants to remove entrenched power from Washington, and nowhere is the power more concentrated and unmoving than at the Supreme Court," Gabe Roth, Fix the Court's executive director, said of the results. "Any serious congressional proposal to end life tenure at the high court, then, should have wide bipartisan support."

Based in Chicago, Fix the Court advocates for more accountability and transparency at the nation's highest court. The organization has called for 18-year fixed terms for justices.

Term limits for the Supreme Court would require a constitutional amendment, legal scholars told the Washington Examiner.
