Texas Sen. Ted Cruz confirmed Thursday he will speak at the upcoming Republican National Convention after Donald Trump asked him to.

Cruz and RNC Chairman Reince Preibus met with Trump in Washington, D.C. Thursday. Afterward, Cruz told reporters he accepted Trump's invitation to join him in Cleveland in less than two weeks.

"We had a positive and productive meeting this morning with Donald Trump. Donald asked me to speak at the Republican Convention, and I told him I'd be happy to," Cruz said.

An ABC reporter posted a short clip of Cruz's comments on Twitter.

"There was no discussion of any endorsement. He asked me if I would speak at the convention, and I said I'd be very glad to do so."

Cruz spokesperson Catherine Frazier released a statement about Thursday's meeting, which included a conversation about judicial nominations.

"Mr. Trump also asked Sen. Cruz for his counsel on future judicial nominations, and Cruz responded he would continue to do everything he can to help ensure principled constitutionalists on the courts," she said.

Speculation has swirled this week whether Cruz would attend the convention in a speaker's role. His own presidential campaign fell short to Trump, who is expected to fetch the nomination.

A report this week, meanwhile, claimed Cruz is gearing up for a potential run at the White House down the road.

Cruz supporters have been working to get him on the nomination ballot as well.

Earlier Thursday, Trump met with other Republican lawmakers as both sides try to mend fences and unite the party.
