Sen. Ted Cruz warned Friday that the Republican majority in the Senate is "hanging by a threat," and he is worried about waking up after the November elections and hearing the words "Majority Leader Chuck Schumer."

"I promise that would be a bad, bad thing for our nation, so I am working hard to help my colleagues in tough races get re-elected," the Texas Republican and former 2016 presidential candidate said Friday at an annual rally held by the Kingwood, Texas Tea Party, reports The Texas Tribune.

Cruz, encouraging conservatives to vote, told the rally that it won't take "that many to have an enormous impact on the outcome" if voters just stay home. "Whatever happens, we need a check of a Republican Senate to check the executive and protect our liberty."

Cruz has kept relatively quiet since his speech at the Republican National Convention, where he refused to endorse Donald Trump as the party's nominee,

However, he did speak out against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, calling her "manifestly unfit to be the president of the United States," and joking that he has "government housing in mind for her, but it’s a little smaller and has fewer windows.”

In recent days, Cruz has agreed to send $100,000 to the National Republican Senatorial
Committee and to host fundraisers for two colleagues. However, his refusal to back Trump is still backfiring, and there has been talk encouraging Rep. Michael McCaul to run against Cruz in the 2018 primary.
