Cruz Attempts 'Hoosiers' Scene, Calls Basketball Hoop a 'Ring'

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's attempt at emulating a scene in a famous sports movie fell a bit short in Indiana on Tuesday.

During a campaign speech inside the baseball arena where much of "Hoosiers" was filmed in 1985, Cruz fumbled his line.

Indianapolis television station WISH posted a clip of the gaffe onto YouTube (see above).

"Ten feet. You know, the amazing thing is that basketball ring here in Indiana is the same height as it is in New York City and every other place in this country," the Republican presidential candidate said, referring to the hoop as a ring. "And there is nothing that Hoosiers cannot do."

As Cruz was speaking, the camera panned to a man standing on a ladder and measuring the height of the basketball hoop.

It was an attempt to recreate a scene from the movie in which the coach, played by Gene Hackman, tried to relax his players by taking measurements under the basket and from the floor to the basket.

"I think you'll find these are the exact same measurements as our gym back in Hickory," Hackman said.

Cruz made a pact with fellow candidate John Kasich over the weekend as the pair tries to prevent Donald Trump from winning the Republican nomination this summer. Kasich is allowing Cruz to take on Trump largely on his own in Indiana. Cruz is doing the same for Kasich in Oregon and New Mexico.

Trump swept all five Republican primaries Tuesday night to extend his lead in the delegate vote totals.
