Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is giving supporters a heads-up that he might be taking on "the Castro brothers" in his 2018 Senate re-election race.

Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro floated a 2018 run Tuesday during a joint interview with his twin, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro, on "CBS This Morning."

Asked who plans to run against Cruz in two years, Julian Castro replied: "Probably zero of us. Right now, that's not in our plans to run in Texas."

"Well, he's speaking for himself," Joaquin Castro interjected.

"I'm going to take a look at it in 2018. I'll take a look at that and other opportunities. I've never been somebody who's said in two years, I absolutely need to run for senate or governor."

By Tuesday afternoon, Cruz had sent out a fundraising email through his Senate campaign with the subject line "The Castro brothers," Politico reports.

"Our opponents are already making plans to defeat us, so we cannot afford to wait to engage until 2018," the email reads.

"Despite any record of achievement and a liberal ideology out of touch with the majority of Texans, the Castro brothers have the full support of the mainstream media and Washington establishment willing to do everything in their power to turn Texas blue."

A Cruz-Castro matchup would pit two of the highest-profile Hispanics in either major political party against each other, guaranteeing that it would at least be an expensive campaign, the Washington Examiner notes.

But one GOP source in Texas tells the outlet he doesn't think it'll happen.

"People like attention, like to be in the conversation, build their profile, they get bored," the source tells the outlet. "Ultimately, my guess is that these guys are smarter than to run against Cruz in Texas in '18 ... but you never know!"

The source added the brothers took a pass on running for governor in 2014 and suggested that if either Castro brother believed he could win a statewide election, one of them would have run for governor in 2014 "because they knew it would set Dem efforts back even further by getting trounced."
