Donald Trump's inner circle is considering a 5 percent tariff on imports that the president-elect would impose through executive action after the inauguration, according to news reports.

Incoming White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus has been telling business executives Trump is weighing the tax, multiple sources told CNN.

But the plan received strong opposition in Washington, the sources said, adding they were not sure whether it was serious or was just being tested for reaction.

Trump transition officials did not respond to a request for comment, CNN reported.

The Republican slammed free-trade agreements during the campaign, vowing to impose a 35 percent tax on goods imported by companies that have moved out of the United States.
