Two senators caught on a hot microphone commiserated about President Donald Trump's federal budget proposal and his lack of understanding about the process, The Washington Post reported.

With both unaware that a nearby microphone was still on after a subcommittee meeting Tuesday, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she was "worried" while Sen. Jack Reed, D-RI, said he thinks Trump "is crazy."

Part of the conversation, according to the Post:

Collins: "I swear, [OMB] just went through and whenever there was 'grant,' they just X it out. With no measurement, no thinking about it, no metrics, no nothing. It's just incredibly irresponsible."

Reed: "Yes. I think — I think he's crazy. I mean, I don't say that lightly and as a kind of a goofy guy."

Collins: "I'm worried."

Reed: "You know, this thing — if we don't get a budget deal, we're going to be paralyzed."

Collins' office later released a statement, acknowledging what was supposed to be a private conversation and elucidating her position.

"Senator Collins is worried about the elimination of transportation and housing programs in the president's budget request that are critically important to local communities across our country," spokeswoman Annie Clark said in a statement, the Post reported.

Collins also took aim at Republican congressman Blake Farenthold during that same hot mic conversation with Reed, responding to the Texas Republican's assertion last week that Collins was to blame for the failure of Republicans to pass healthcare, and that he would have challenged her to a duel if she were a man from Texas.

Collins called Farenthold "fat" and "unattractive," comments for which she later apologized.

"Neither weapons nor inappropriate words are the right way to resolve legislative disputes. I received a handwritten apology from Rep. Farenthold late this morning. I accept his apology, and I offer him mine," Collins said in a statement, the Post reported.
