Steny Hoyer on Russia: 'Continuing Pattern of Cover-Up'

The No. 2-ranked Democrat in the House said Thursday he sees a "continuing pattern of cover-up" regarding the allegations that President Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russia.

Hoyer appeared on CNN's "New Day" and spoke about the ongoing Russia probe.

"Really, what's so concerning is the pattern that exists here. First of all, you start out with [Paul] Manafort and [Roger] Stone and [Michael] Flynn [being] paid by others who had very close financial relationships with the Russians," House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer told co-host Chris Cuomo.

"Then you have a candidate who talks very positively about [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, who is I think by most of the world seen as an international lawbreaker and an underminer of human rights, and murders both journalists and opponents in his country. You have a candidate who is justifying feeling that he's a pretty good guy.

"And then you have this continuing pattern of cover-up. It's the pattern that I think leads one to believe that there's fire where there's so much smoke."

Hoyer represents Maryland's 5th District. He called for a special commission to investigate the Russia claims.

"We ought to appoint a special commission, similar to the 9/11 Commission, to look at the broader impact of Russian involvement in our elections," Hoyer said. "Not necessarily from a criminal standpoint, but from an undermining-our-democracy standpoint."

Hoyer noted that he feels it's too early to begin talking about impeaching Trump.
