Rep. Steny Hoyer: AHCA Won't Accomplish What Trump Promised

The No. 2 ranked Democrat in the House said Thursday the GOP's Obamacare replacement bill does not accomplish what the party — and President Donald Trump — actually said it would.

Rep. Steny Hoyer appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" and argued that the American Health Care Act is a "bad bill" that will not pass in Thursday's scheduled vote on the House floor.

"It clearly does not achieve what the president promised to the American people," the Maryland Democrat said. "He said everybody was going to have insurance. He didn't say access to insurance. He said everybody was going to have insurance, better quality, at lower cost. This does not accomplish that.

"Other Republicans said they wanted to repeal the Affordable Care Act. This bill does not accomplish that."

Hoyer argued that the bill would actually raise monthly premiums because, in part, it would result in 14 million people losing health insurance coverage by 2018. That, he said, is reason enough to vote it down.

"This is a bad bill, it doesn't accomplish the objective the American people want or that President Trump said he wanted to accomplish," Hoyer said. "Therefore, they are having great difficulty convincing members either who think it hurts too many people or frankly, members who think it doesn't hurt enough people."

Several Republicans are not on board with the bill, enough that House Speaker Paul Ryan, Trump, and other backers are doing what they can to cut deals and garner support for it.

A report Thursday morning, however, said no deal has been made that would give Republicans the votes they need to pass the piece of legislation.

If the bill makes it through the House and gets passed in the Senate, Hoyer said people who voted for Trump in last year's presidential election would lose coverage.

"The irony is, the people who are going to lose most are a lot of the Trump voters in the middle of the country," he said.
